JUNE, 2010 - MDAA PROFESSIONALISM AWARDS
This award is given by the MDAA to a student in each graduating class who has excelled academically, clinically and displayed professionalism through out the school year.
CDI College - Professionalism Awards
Zorica Burazor
Zorica graduated from the morning Intra Oral Dental Assisting class in March 2010. During her time at CDI College she excelled academically and conducted herself with professionalism at all times. She was quick to assist other students and lend a hand in the clinical component of the program. Zorica is currently employed as a level II dental assistant.
Maribeth Mercado
Maribeth graduated from the Intra Oral Dental Assisting afternoon class in December 2009. With a background in the dental field, Maribeth quickly learnt the scope of practice and responsibilities of a level II dental assistant. Maribeth always assisted other students in the clinic, lab and radiology sections of the program when they asked and often tutored other students. It is this dedication to the dental professional that makes Maribeth an excellent dental assistant.
Katie Scavarelli
Katie graduated in March 2010 from the evening dental assisting program at CDI College. Working during the day and coming to class in the evening is difficult, but Katie was able to balance the two successfully. Her academic and practical skills are excellent and will make a fabulous dental assistant.
Tech Voc High School - Congratulations Renee Ryan - Professionalism Award
The recipient of this award is hardworking and energetic. She displays professionalism not only in her immaculate appearance, but also in her speech and in her mannerisms. She is a very caring person and this is evident in her interactions with patients, staff and fellow students. She is always willing to help out other students when they need help and truly works well in a team environment. She is positive and receptive to all around her making her a pleasure to work with. She also maintained an A+ average throughout the program showing her dedication and attitude towards education.
She has a very calming demeanour and never seemed to get ruffled with the pressures of school. During her time in the program it was not always easy for her. She was able to balance the hectic pace of school with her family and home life. And speaking of family she also managed to complete the program while expecting and now has a wonderful new daughter as an addition to her family.
College Of The North - Professionalism Award
On behalf of the Dental Assisting Program I would like to take this opportunity to thank the MDAA for its continued sponsorship of the Professionalism Award. This year's recipient is Larissa Shaw of Nipawin Saskatchewan.
Larissa is very conscientious, hard working, and highly motivated. Larissa came to us with experience as an office trained assistant and she shared her knowledge to enhance class discussion. We could always depend on Larissa to help her peers in any academic or clinical scenario. Her work ethic is second to none, she is very comfortable with patients of all ages and she is respectful and professional in all interactions.
Larissa is regarded highly by her peers who selected her to be the recipient of the Dr. Schadek Memorial Award. Larissa will return to Saskatchewan to continue her career as a registered dental assistant.
Red River College - Congratulations to Jennifer Bruinooge - Professionalism Award, May 2010
The Manitoba Dental Assistants’ Association presents this award for outstanding conduct and qualities that characterize a professional. The recipient displays a very positive attitude, is polite, accepts criticism and acts on it. Her calm and quiet mannerisms served her well as class rep. She works well with her classmates, is a good listener and never seems to get frustrated during the grad planning meetings. She is organized, punctual, reliable, responsible, prepared, competent and maintained the confidentiality of patients. She maintained high grades and her skills were excellent. She likes to get things done and was the first to complete the dental dam requirements in January. She volunteered to be part of the Dental Assisting Advisory committee at RRC and took one of her free days to take a seminar with the office staff in her practicum. Jennifer Bruinooge is well deserving of this award and has a definite enthusiasm for our profession.
RRC Winkler Campus - Professionalism Award Winner
Kyla Thiessen received the MDAA Professionalism Award after graduating from the Red River College Dental Assisting program, Winkler Campus. Throughout the course of the program, Kyla inspired her fellow students with her work ethic and enthusiasm. While treating patients, Kyla always maintained a high level of professionalism and her bright smile was contagious to those around her! Kyla is excited to share her love of dentistry and her newly chosen profession with patients within the Pembina Valley.
Lois Berg (below) receives the Marion Edwards Achievement
Award for the advancement of dental assisting in Manitoba.

Kari Enns received the Diane Pike Journalism Award for an original article written for the CDAA Journal. Kari's article was on Siloam Mission and how they work with the disadvantaged to give quality dental care.
